From what I understand from other parents, kids' drawings start to actually resemble drawings at around age four. Kayla was right on target -- two weeks shy of her 4th birthday, her drawings stopped looking like scribbles. Suddenly, she was sidewalk chalk-ing flags and "ballerinas" all over my parents' driveway:

Jocelyn's drawings started to become identifiable much earlier on. George thinks it's because Jocelyn saw Kayla drawing and started copying her. That may be so, but I'm attributing Jocelyn's natural artistic talent to the fact that she is left-handed. She has always shown a very strong preference for her left hand, even as an infant. The girls and I were watching old videos from when they were little babies. I found this one and didn't realize Jocelyn was showing signs of her left-handedness practically from the womb! (She isn't even six months old in this video.)
The video just cracks me up. But, I digress. The first drawing by Jocelyn that I have that actually looks like people was from when she was just 2 and a half:

Look how far she's come in less than one year! She told me these people are "getting married and they have wings." Then she told me that the people she drew, from left to right, are George, me and Ah-ma.

The lady on the right with the circles on her head (I'm gonna call them hair curlers) has lipstick on:

Here's a drawing she made up herself by tracing a scalloped paper punch.

And these last two drawings amuse the most. Not only does it show that despite all the petty arguing, Jocie really does love her sister, but I love how left-handed her writing is! (No, I did not flip the image in Photoshop, that's really how Jocelyn writes most of the time! Why everything except the "J" is perfect mirror image is beyond me.)

I think it's adorable to look back on infant videos. Can you believe they were ever just babies?! And wow, Jocelyn can really draw! And those drawings at 2.5 are amazing. J just draws straight lines and circles now but I'm sure he'll surprise me with a drawing done at daycare one of these days. Gooo girl! And so curious that she writes backwards....sign of genius?
ReplyDeleteThe "J" is the only one going the correct way because the letter itself is drawn to the left! What does she do with the letter "S?"
