Jocelyn loves the baby doll she got for Christmas. She sleeps with it every night. When it's time to leave the room, she gets up on her tippy-toes to reach over the crib railing to put the baby doll away. When we get upstairs to her room every evening for bath, the first thing she says upon entering her room is, "Baaay-bee!" Then, at bedtime, Jocie asks me to swaddle up the doll in a blanket (we use one of the receiving blankets from the hospital) and then I have to put the baby doll in the crib right next to her on the Pillow Pet.
One morning, several weeks ago, Joce was walking around her room with her doll. She noticed Kayla's doll on her bed, pointed to it and said, "Whatsat?" I told her it was Kayla's doll. She held up her doll and asked, "Whatsat?" I told her it was Jocie's doll. "Uh-huh," she said and nodded approvingly. While I was getting her dressed, I asked her, "Where's Mommy's baby?" Jocelyn held out her empty hands and shrugged as if she were saying, "I don't know, where is your baby?" Again, I asked her, "Where's Mommy's baby? Does Mommy have a baby?" Jocelyn pointed to Kayla's doll. "No," I said, "that's Kayla's baby." Then she reached for her own doll and then held it out to give to me. (Soooo sweet, and my heart melted at her selflessness and readiness to always share!) "Oh thank you, Jocie, but she's your baby doll," I told her. "Here's Mommy's baby!!!" as I reached out to grab her and snuggle with her. She squealed and then squirmed out of my arms.
Jocelyn may be turning two in ten days (why oh why do they have to grow up so fast??) but she will always be Mommy's little baby.
