Kitchen Fund

Kayla has been asking about the kitchen renovation. Our response has been that we need to save more money in order to pay for it. She volunteered to give us money from her piggy bank to help fund the project. A couple of weeks passed without the kitchen coming up in discussion. A few days ago, the girls were watching TV downstairs while I was working on the computer and Karen was cooking dinner. I could tell that the TV show had ended and the girls came climbing up the stairs. Karen told them it was time for dinner. While continuing up the stairs to their rooms, Kayla said, "We have to get our piggy banks to give money to Daddy for the kitchen." A few minutes later, they appeared in the office with their piggy banks and said to me, "Daddy, can you help us open the piggy banks so we can give you some money for the kitchen?" They dumped out the coins in their banks and I asked them if they were giving me all their money. Kayla said, "No," and they pushed aside a few coins totaling 70¢. I told them that it really wasn't necessary but they insisted. I said, "Thank you." After they left the room, i put all the coins back in their piggy banks.

The next day, Kayla asked where the money that they set aside was. I told them that it was in the bank and Kayla responded, "Well, where's the kitchen?" I answered, "Ummm, we still need a little more money but what you and Jocelyn gave us will definitely help." Then I asked her if she wanted to see the design on the computer. (Karen and I had come up with a plan using IKEA's 3D program online.) I pulled it up and gave Kayla the tour. She really liked the black counter tops and she said it reminded her of Tuesday's kitchen from one of the House Crashers/Kitchen Crashers episodes on HGTV. (I can't even remember how long ago we had seen this episode but do recall a homeowner named Tuesday.) Apparently the kitchen renovation from that episode had left an impression on Kayla.

Today, all four of us went to The Home Depot to take a look at some American Woodmark cabinets. Kayla really wanted to come with us and was most interested in looking at "shiny black counter tops" and white cabinets. When we got to the wall with the granite samples, she immediately pointed to Stellar Night granite which, of course, is one of the most expensive counter tops.
