Learning Chinese

The girls were cleaning up their toys one afternoon. Jocelyn picked up a few Disney princess figurines and I asked her if she knew what the princesses' names were.

Beauty, she said as she held up Belle.

Good, I said, What about that princess?

Ummmmm, Pocahontas.

No, that's Mulan, I told her. She's Chinese.

Ohhhhhhh.

Jocelyn, are you Chinese?

No, she answered, and shook her head.

Actually, you are... sort of, I told her. (This blog post isn't going to go into which culture our kids will identify themselves as.) Is Kayla Chinese?

No, Jocelyn replied again.

Yes I am, Kayla answered from across the room.

Is Mommy Chinese?

Nope!, Jocelyn said.

Yes she is! answered Kayla.

What about Daddy? Is he Chinese?
I asked Jocelyn.

No, he's not, Kayla chimed in, He's learning how to be one.
