Jocelyn's 2-year old Checkup

Hard to believe that my little baby is two already! (Pics of her birthday "party" coming soon.) We visited the pediatrician last Friday, and so far, Jocelyn seems to be living up to her genetic potential!

Height: 32.25" (12.73%)
Weight: 24 lb (15.74%)

I still feel compelled to Google a Chinese or Taiwanese growth chart just to see how the girls would be doing compared to other Asians. We're sort of at a disadvantage using U.S. growth charts!!

I brought up my concerns with Jocelyn's speech and language development again. The pediatrician asked if she had 50 words (that must be the average amount of vocabulary for 2-year olds) and I said No. :( We discussed that maybe Jocelyn isn't talking as much because her older sister yaps enough for the both of them. The doctor said we could take her to Child Find to get her assessed, but that usually within three months or so, children who are a little delayed in language tend to really explode, so I could be worrying about nothing.

Jocelyn has been making more and more effort to talk. She gets frustrated once in awhile when we don't understand what she wants, but for the most part, she gets her point across. And she certainly doesn't have any auditory processing issues - she can follow 2-step directions already and knows exactly what we are talking about! So... I haven't called Child Find yet... but now that I am thinking about it, I wonder just exactly how many words *does* she have in her vocabulary right now?

1. Ma-Ma (YESSS!!)
2. Da-Da
3. Jie-Jie
4. Baby
5. Uh-oh
6. Ball
7. Bubble
8. Tish (tissue)
9. Kah (car)
10. boo (blue)
11. Mish (Michigan)
12. Bo Bo (for Uncle Dave)
13. Bye-bye
14. Hi
15. Hewwo (hello)
16. Tickle
17. Pwetz (pretzel)
18. Boo boo
19. Bosh (brush)
20. No
21. Yes (she doesn't say this unless Kayla tells her to)
22. something she says to refer to her blanket
23. wash (she rubs her hands together to mimic washing hands)
24. Ish (rinse)
25. Pop
26. Boo! (to scare someone)
27. Kock-kok ("knock knock" on the door)

And if animal sounds count:
1. Rawr (lion, tiger, t-rex, bear)
2. Hop Hop (bunny)
3. boooooo (mooooo for cow)
4. Kak-kak (quack for duck)
5. ennnnh-nrrrrr! (elephant)
6. Baaaa (sheep)
7. Neighhh (horse)
8. nnnfff-nffff (woof for dog)
9. aoowwwww! (meow for cat)
10. Whooooo whooo (owl)
11. nnnk nnnnk (oink oink)

Soo.... maybe she has about 40 words. Not terribly far behind. But still, I worry because she hasn't really started linking two words together for short phrases. One time, I thought she said "buuuu pate" for "blue plate" at dinner time. She hasn't said it since though. The other concern is that George and I are the only ones who can sort of understand what she is saying and means. As you can see from the gibberish I typed in the lists above, Jocie has invented a lot of her own ways of saying words. I guess we shall wait and see... but I do worry that the longer I wait, and if this does turn out to be a true delay, that we might not be able to make up for lost time!
